In Spanish there are two verbs meaning "to be," ser and estar.

ser implies permanancy, an inherent or essential quality

E.g., Soy hombre. - I am a man.

estar

estar implies a temporary condition, an accidental or external state or quality

E.g., Estoy cansado. - I am tired.

Estar is used with the present participle (gerund) of a verb to express actions that are unfinished and are actually continuing at the moment, e.g., estoy hablando - I am speaking (right now).

The imperfect of estar can be used with the past participle (gerund) of a verb, e.g., Mi primo estaba sentado - My cousin was sitting
